2K Hires Popular Battle Royale Producer to Revitalize Troubled Action Game Ambitious Title

The renowned publisher has appointed Ben Brinkman from Respawn Entertainment to direct the studio crew at 31st Union, which is currently crafting the forthcoming third-person action-packed title known as this innovative game.

Leadership Transition Follows Mixed Feedback

Brinkman takes on the role of studio head at the development studio following the exit of former leader the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was removed from his post due to Project Ethos' lackluster unveiling last autumn.

On Wednesday, the company's top executive a key figure notified employees about this organizational change through an internal memo, which stressed that playtesting had indicated the necessity for a distinct vision.

Ismailer expressed that the team is now refining the project with a refreshed approach, aiming to satisfy player expectations.

Trend of Strategic Hires

The news echoes a similar move taken by 2K Games in August, when they brought on Rod Fergusson from Blizzard to assist with the beloved franchise studio Cloud Chamber.

Below is the complete text from Ismailer's memo:

Dear Team—

I understand you all just wrapped up your town hall - I hope you’re as enthusiastic as I am with the good news. Previously I shared you all a update, I stated the following: “I believe in this group. You all are some of the most dedicated and innovative designers we have had the chance to partner with - and we’re eager for that partnership to continue.”

With your dedication and adaptability, especially over the past twelve months, you continue to prove that.

The player input from last fall’s the game playtest was enlightening. It affirmed the potential of a roguelike shooter but told us we still had refinements needed. It revealed the requirement for a clearer vision.

It has been motivating to see how far you’ve progressed. You accepted the criticism to consideration and revamped Project ETHOS with a renewed goal - one that’s poised to achieve its potential to our players.

The trust in Project ETHOS increases every day. To boost the remarkable advancement you’ve made, I am thrilled to introduce the new hire as the latest Director of the team. Following a period of conversations, he comes aboard us on Monday, October 20.

His guidance and experience in the competitive gaming field is vast, having devoted the last 15 years developing and leading some of the most recognizable series in the industry, such as Call of Duty: Black Ops, and lately, the battle royale hit.

Please join me in welcoming Ben soon. We are all excited to persist witnessing the progress of Project ETHOS in the weeks to ahead.

Experience of the Incoming Leader

The appointee currently serves in the position of senior developer and production lead at the renowned studio for Apex Legends. Brinkman earlier worked at major gaming companies in diverse production roles on the iconic franchise series, and, prior to that, had stints at 2K and Electronic Arts.

Game Details and Concept

Project Ethos was revealed in last year alongside a public demo. Initially, 31st Union portrayed the title as a "no-cost, third-person perspective action-packed experience and an exciting advancement on the style."

"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Customize your character in real-time to match your preferred approach," the official summary explains. "Face the opponents with new abilities, stakes, and obstacles that change every round. Will you leave securely with your hard-earned loot? Alternatively aim high, gamble everything, and trust your group can secure victory? The option is up to you."

Project Ethos does not have an announced release date or supported systems, but players can look forward to more updates as production advances.
