Australia's captain Expected to Feature a Key Part in the Ashes

Test match action

The Australian skipper has secured 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an average of 22.10.

The Australian selection chief George Bailey has declared that pace spearhead Cummins will play a "major part" in the upcoming historic rivalry.

There were concerns that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that was still troubling him.

Earlier indications from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding his involvement, with the Test matches scheduled to begin on November 21 in Western Australia.

The selector shared that Cummins is "building up" and was "optimistic" about the prospects of taking part.

"We know that time is getting short and multiple considerations involved, aside from the physical problem, but other factors as well," Bailey remarked.

"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he will feature a significant role. Hopefully from the opening match. Otherwise, then we'll pick it up."

Past Concerns

He was sidelined the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand recently after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.

Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with recurrences in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 forcing him out of several home seasons in a short span.

The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the Ashes.

He mentioned that he did not know if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his comeback but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to recover fully for the opener.

Backup Options

If he's unavailable, veteran batsman Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from the national team for their one-day international series against India as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.

The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that he's scheduled to appear in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "in a good place to resume bowling."

"We put so much time has gone into developing the strategy for him to take part for the first Test as an all-rounder," he elaborated.

"He was only going to play the first two ODIs regardless. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for a short period, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
