In a significant development ahead of the upcoming general election, a pair of high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the aftermath of large-scale and deadly young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the incumbent government.
A Commitment to Address Youth Concerns
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the younger generation. This commitment comes after the turbulent anti-graft protests that took place in September, which led to considerable casualties.
"Consensus must not be what a leader wants, it should be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the deal was signed.
The late summer uprising was sparked by public frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and longstanding allegations of deep-rooted political corruption.
Details of the New Electoral Agreement
According to the official agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread discontent with the country's established political leadership. He has in the past served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in forming the caretaker government that came to power after the ousted administration was dissolved.
Wider Political Consultations Underway
In a separate event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend held meetings with a number of major political figures. These discussions involved ex- prime ministers and the presidents of other major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the protests.
Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a shared duty. The message reiterated the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and fear-free atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
