Approximately 50 automobiles have been covered with what seems to be human blood in the Germany's city of Hanau near Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.

Cars, building surfaces and postal boxes were defaced, in some cases with swastikas, they reported in a official communication.

Law enforcement say they were contacted in the late hours on Wednesday evening, when a individual discovered that a automobile in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish-hued liquid.

The substance had been drawn in the shape of a Nazi symbol, they stated.

Officers then found numerous other smeared vehicles and residential walls in the adjacent neighborhood.

Swastikas are illegal in Germany under regulations outlawing the public display of symbols from the Nazi era.

Law enforcement state preliminary tests indicate the substance was most likely human bodily fluid.

"There is still no clue as to its origin; investigators are not yet cognizant of any harm in relation with the incident," they added.

Local authorities stated they were trying "to resolve the mystery" and have asked to the public for information.

An important official commented the incident made him without words and required to be resolved promptly.

"This incident strikes at the core of Hanau and reopens the trauma of the far-right terrorist attack in 2020," he stated on a platform, recalling the killing of nine victims by a gunman targeting people of migrant background in five years prior.
